SOMERSET REBELS 55 SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS 35 (CHAMPIONSHIP)

HEB Scunthorpe Scorpions suffered a 35-55 defeat in a league match at Somerset last night (Wednesday).

The final result does not reflect Scorpions’ efforts, on a night of some entertaining racing between the two sides.

New signing Ben Barker top scored with 11 points for Scorpions, despite suffering a broken chain while leading Heat 10, while Danny Ayres (pictured) contributed 9+1 after a typically whole-hearted effort. Both won two races apiece.

Scorpions’ other new signing Simon Lambert was also in the thick of the action and scored 5 points.

Ben Barker said: “It was good for me to get out there and start scoring points for the club, and mix it with the Somerset riders – I think we stopped all their maximums by the end of the night.

“It was a shame I lost my chain in one race, otherwise it would have been 14 points rather than 11. But it was still a good start for me with Scunthorpe.

“We’ll kick on from here, and we move onto our home meeting on Friday (against Berwick). It’s important that we pick up a win from that and then maybe we can take something at Newcastle on Sunday.”

SOMERSET 55: Valentin Grobauer 11+2, Chris Harris 11+1, Thomas Jorgensen 9+2, Rory Schlein 8, Anders Rowe 7+1, Todd Kurtz 5+1, Henry Atkins 4.
SCUNTHORPE 35: Ben Barker 11, Danny Ayres 9+1, Simon Lambert 5, Josh Auty 5, Jake Allen 4, Ryan Kinsley 1+1, Stefan Nielsen r/r.

* HEB Scunthorpe Scorpions are twice more in action this week. They host the Berwick Bandits at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (7.30pm), and then travel up to Newcastle on Sunday.
