THRILLER AHEAD AT THE EDDIE WRIGHT RACEWAY

HEB Scunthorpe Scorpions will face a tough test when they face second-placed Glasgow Tigers in league action at the Eddie Wright Raceway this evening (Sunday, 6.30pm).

It’s the first of two successive Sunday meetings at the circuit – both against opposition from Scotland. The two fixtures have slightly different starting times – today’s clash against Glasgow starts at 6.30pm, whereas next Sunday’s clash against Edinburgh commences at 5.30pm.

Today’s meeting is set to go ahead, despite the inclement weather over the last couple of days.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey revealed: “We must have pumped off thousands of gallons of water off the track yesterday (Saturday).

“The forecast for today is much better, and unless it changes for the worse, it will be all systems go for the visit of Glasgow.”

Scorpions are set to be back to full strength, with the return of Stefan Nielsen, who has spent a spell on the sidelines with knee ligament injuries.

Scunthorpe’s record in their last three home meetings are victories over Sheffield (55-35), Eastbourne (54-35) and Berwick (56-34), while Glasgow have won three out of their four away matches in the Championship.

Godfrey says: “It certainly isn’t going to be easy today against a Glasgow team that has already won away at Birmingham, Eastbourne and Edinburgh, and boasts the top rider in the league in Great Britain international Craig Cook.

“In all competitions, only twice this season have Tigers scored fewer than 40 points in a match, so we know we are going to have to be at our best today.

“But we go into the fixture full of confidence and boosted by the return of Stefan Nielsen from injury.

“Stefan slots back in at No 2, which means we don’t have to rely on rider replacement as cover for his rides, and that eases the pressure and the workload on the rest of the side.

“I’m expecting a corker of a meeting. Looking at our recent home form and Glasgow’s away form, then something must give!

“We’ve got a home meeting every week for the next six weeks, so I urge our supporters to bring along their family and friends to get behind the lads, in the push for a play-off position, which is still well within our grasp.”
