SCORPIONS ON GUARD AGAINST OLD BOYS

HEB Scunthorpe Scorpions feature in an intriguing and mouth-watering clash with the Newcastle Diamonds at the Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow (Friday, 7.30pm).

The Diamonds’ team is led by ex-Scorpions’ Steve Worrall and Thomas Jorgensen and contains no less than four former Scunthorpe riders, with Max Clegg and Danny Phillips also in the side.

Newcastle have been something of an enigma this season – they currently sit at the bottom of the league table, but they have reached the cup final.

Scorpions will again use rider replacement for Danny Ayres, who is ruled out of the rest of the season with a broken leg.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “Newcastle will be no pushovers, and with former Scorpions such as Steve Worrall and Thomas Jorgensen in their ranks, they are certain to give us a great match.

“The line-ups do look a bit like Scunthorpe v Ex-Scunthorpe, so it’s going to be a night of top entertainment.

“I’m expecting another tense, tight and exciting affair, much like our last home match against Birmingham a fortnight ago, which ended in a draw, although I want to see us emerge with a victory this time around.

“It’s a tough test and we will need the crowd right behind our boys, but one I believe that we can pass. It’s definitely a meeting not to be missed, especially with only another couple of home meetings to go after this.”

A warm, dry and sunny day is predicted for Friday, and Godfrey is delighted.

“You wouldn’t believe that it’s been summer the last few weeks”, he commented.

“We’ve staged three meetings when there’s been rain around, although not enough to call off the meeting. And then last week we had to postpone our meeting against Redcar.

“But the forecast looks great for Friday and indeed over the whole Bank Holiday weekend. I can’t think of a better way to start the weekend than a visit to Scunthorpe Speedway at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening.”
